IN THE SPIRIT OF UNITY
Work Schedule 2011-2012 School Year
The first day back to work for 10- month members is Monday, August 22, 2011. At the time of printing this newsletter, we have not agreed on a full work schedule with the district. We will post the schedule on our website http://mi.aft.org/daeoe and in the next newsletter.
What Does the Contract Say?
Article XIX Section B: 1L of the contract reads:
“If a regular employee is absent for illness on the first day of the week schedule in the school year, the illness must be confirmed by the Medical Office, or a written request for approval from the employee must be approved by the Chief Fiscal Officer. This applies to the absence for one (1) or more days. Approval of the Medical Officer requires Form 432 from the employee’s attending physician to the Medical Office.”
Labor Day Parade
The Labor Day parade is Monday, September 5, 2011. This year’s theme is Labor and Community We Are One. DAEOE will be marching with the American Federation of Teacher-Michigan. Our staging area is located on Peterboro and Woodward. Parking is available on Cobo Roof and shuttle buses will bring members to the staging areas.
T Shirts will be distributed at our staging area beginning at 7: 30 a.m. Look for the AFT Michigan signs. DAEOE members are encouraged to email Gail Spencer at firstname.lastname@example.org and provide your t-shirt size.
We are second in line this year. We, along with other public sector unions, are in the front of the parade to show strength and to protest the Emergency Manager bill. If you are mad, disgusted and appalled about the imposed 10% wage cut and 20% healthcare increase, you should be at the parade. It is time to stand up and be counted!
The parade begins at 9 a.m.
AFT Detroit is comprised of the three (3) American Federation of Teachers (AFT) locals in Detroit, the Detroit Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 231; the Detroit Federation of Paraprofessional, AFT Local 2350; and the Detroit Association of Educational Office Employees, AFT Local 4168. We stand together to fight against the unjust action of the governor and the emergency manager law (PA4).
Last week we sent out a robo call informing members of our actions.
- On Thursday, August 4, 2011, we file a lawsuit in federal court against
wage cuts and healthcare premium increase.
- We asked that you prepare for a call to action.
Our first Call to Action will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Fisher Building. Members are encouraged to come out and support your own selves. We must show Roy Roberts that we are not taking his actions likely.
In May members were mailed petitions from AFT Michigan to repeal the Emergency Manager law. If you have not signed the petition, please do so and return it to AFT Michigan or the union office.
AFT Detroit will send notices of our future actions to all our members via your personal email addresses. Send your email addresses to the union office.
